The Federal Ministry for Climate Protection shared an interesting observation with us: Two million Austrian homes are still heated by coal, oil, or gas, yet the heating sector holds enormous potential to cut CO₂ emissions. They offered financial support to anyone who replaces their old heating systems with new, climate-friendly ones. Great. Now the public just needed to know about it. To raise awareness, we chose a rather unconventional approach: We used the occasion of Halloween to tell a story about a young boy who will undoubtedly benefit from a climate-friendly future, and showed those old heating systems lurking in the dark of basements for what they really are: scary.
A band of creeps was formed – with a special supporting act. On social media, people could interact directly with our band members, who gladly answered every question about changing a heating system like true A-listers, while, of course, still trying to convince everyone not to do it.
We chose a live-action puppetry approach, with as little CG work as possible. Everything was built and performed by real humans, with incredible dedication and care – something that can be felt. I will never stop believing that.
